The full-size American pickup is perhaps the most utilitarian vehicle on the market. Since most “lifestyle buyers” have left the segment – meaning fewer 110-pound soccer moms toting 60-pound kids in these 18-foot-long behemoths – the remaining truck buyers value functional capability above all else. While some in the environmental community don’t understand there are occasions when fuel economy has to be forfeited in the name of capability, trades people, commercial users, farmers and ranchers need pickup trucks.

So General Motors made sure the first pickup trucks that use its Two-Mode Hybrid system would be nearly as capable as their non-hybrid brethren when introduced for the 2009 model year. The two-wheel drive (2-WD) versions of the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid – and its twin toolbox, the GMC Sierra Hybrid – proudly trumpet the crucial stats for full-size pickups. They can tow up to 6,100 pounds, the bed can haul a little more than 1,400 pounds and still deliver 20 mpg city/23 mpg highway with a combined rating of 21 mpg. Four-wheel drive (4WD) versions have the same fuel economy numbers but give up 200 pounds of towing capacity.

One of these items we chose to look at was a new type of bed liner, that fits the Chevrolet trucks with a custom contour following polyethylene panel. The bed liner is called the Dual Liner and it is unlike any other bed liner on the market, It will not cause any chaffing or any other adverse effects to the truck bed. The previous  spray on bed liners either required you to grind up the finish before installing it in the bed of the truck. In an otherwise dismal news segment that  I have recently listened to,  I heard them talking about why there was and is a huge demand for  their trucks. It stuck out of the new cast “like a sore thumb!”  Here is some of the headlines……

GM, Ford  and Nissan all reported improved sales in November as demand for pickups and sport-utility vehicles helped the industry match its fastest sales pace of the year.

GM’s deliveries in the month climbed 11 percent to 168,739. Sales of its Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs gained 60 percent. Fords sales rose 20 percent to 147,338, fueled by a 55 percent boost in sales of the Edge SUV. Nissan, Honda Motor Co. and Chrysler Group LLC also reported light-truck gains as they boosted results. Toyota  sales fell 3.3 percent.

Industrywide light-vehicle sales ran at a 12.3 million annual pace in November, matching the October rate that was the fastest since the U.S. government’s “cash for clunkers” program in 2009. Annual U.S. sales plunged to 10.4 million last year, the worst year since 1982, after averaging 16.8 million from 2000 to 2007.

“It’s not like happy days are here again — it’s one more plodding step down the road in the right direction,” said Jeremy Anwyl, chief executive officer of Edmunds.com, an auto- shopping research site in Santa Monica, California.

The U.S. automakers’ sales gains lagged analysts’ forecasts. GM was expected to post a 13 percent sales increase by researcher TrueCar.com, and Edmunds.com projected a 12 percent gain. Ford deliveries were expected to rise 21 percent, the average estimate of five analysts. Chrysler reported a 17 percent boost to 74,152, compared with a 26 percent average of five analysts’ estimates.

Nissan Increase

Nissan, Japan’s third-largest automaker, said U.S. sales of Nissan and Infiniti brand vehicles rose 27 percent from a year ago to 71,366. The average of four analysts’ estimates was for a 16 percent gain. The Yokohama-based company benefited from higher sales of crossovers and pickups, posting a combined 54 percent increase in light-truck deliveries.

“You’re going to see strong truck sales all day,” said Michelle Krebs, an analyst with Edmunds.com. “That’s being driven by stable gas prices and pent-up demand from people who use trucks and SUVs for work and have been putting off purchases.”

Average regular unleaded gasoline  in the U.S. have been between $2.60 and $2.95 a gallon throughout 2010, according to AAA.

Stocks Gain

GM rose 58 cents to $34.78 at 4:15 p.m. in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have gained 5.4 percent from their $33 sale price in an initial public offering last month. Ford gained 52 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $16.46. Ford had gained 65 percent this year. Stocks rose on speculation of larger effort to end Europe’s debt crisis.

Chevrolet, which accounted for 70 percent of GM’s sales, boosted deliveries 18 percent to 117,588, the Detroit-based company said today in a statement. Buick sales climbed 36 percent to 11,725 vehicles, led by deliveries of the Enclave SUV, GM said today. GMC sales gained 30 percent to 27,590. Cadillac deliveries rose 21 percent to 11,801.

Sales of the Cadillac SRX climbed 36 percent, the company said.

“We continue to see a gradual rise in overall industry demand,” Don Johnson, GM’s vice president of U.S. sales, said today on a conference call. “Consumers are still cautious. We’re starting to see an inclination for people to come back into dealerships.”

Light-vehicle sales ran faster than the 12.2 million seasonally adjusted annual rate, the average of eight analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. The Conference Board said its monthly Consumer Confidence Survey rose from 49.9 in October to 54.1 in November, the highest level in five months.

More Leasing

Leasing accounted for 11 percent of GM sales, up from a pace of nearly 8 percent for the year, Johnson said. More leasing and subprime lending from General Motors Financial Co. Inc., formerly Ameri-Credit Corp., should help sales as the lender and GM work more closely together, he said.

Since filing for bankruptcy last year, GM has closed Hummer, Pontiac and Saturn and sold Saab to focus on Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC. Sales of those four remaining brands rose 21 percent.

GM’s sales topped Lexington, Massachusetts-based research firm IHS Automotive’s estimate of 162,000 for the month.

“They aren’t blowing the doors out, but it’s a slow, steady recovery,” said  Rebecca Lindland

In business there seems to be many ups and downs, I would suggest that we hold on to our hats and get ready for the ride to the top. The Dual Liner is the only bed liner that I would ever consider to put into a Chevrolet Pick Up. My pick up deserves the best

As you’ve surely seen by now, the new 2011 Silverado HD lineup looks a lot like the old one. But don’t let that fool you-Chevrolet made several significant changes to its heavy-duty line of trucks, which make the pickups run cleaner, tow more, and allows them to be more capable. The new Silverado 3500HD can tow as much as 21,700 pounds with a payload capacity of 6635 pounds. GM also redesigned the independent front suspension, increasing the front axle weight rating and making all 4WD models snowplow-ready. And with all of the performance, ride, and capability changes for the 2011 model year, we were eager to find out how the new pickups perform. Chevrolet provided us with a four-wheel-drive 2500HD LT extended cab with the 6.0-liter Vortec V-8 and a rear-drive 3500HD LT crew cab dualie with the 6.6-liter Duramax turbo-diesel.

The first thing we noticed was how much quieter the cabin was than in past models. Part of that is thanks to the use of hydraulic body mounts under the cab, and part is due to the use of new fully boxed frames. The frames also use more cross members, with hydro-formed front frame segments. These changes increased bending, torsional, and beaming stiffness and helped reduce vibrations. Another benefit was how much better ride comfort and handling are in the new model. Both trucks have nicely weighted steering, too, making the 2500 and 3500 ride and drive like smaller trucks. However, the cabins of both trucks were definitely less luxury-biased than other heavy-duty models on the market. Styling was pretty boring inside, which is fine for most truck people. For the big-belt-buckle crowd, though, the conservative cabins may prove too bland.

It is exciting to watch the Chevrolet Silverado pick up truck evolve into a even more comfortable and more capable vehicle. It is also very exciting to see that bed liners have finally evolved to protect these much improved machines, providing more protection and much more flexibility to haul even the most extreme of cargo with out causing any harm to your truck.

The sidewalls are made from similar technology as the drop in bed liner, the difference is what elevates this new bed liner to the highest level of protection ever offered. The old drop in bed liners were a one piece universal application that was well known for shifting around in the back of the truck as you were driving. One of the improvements to this type of bed liner was making it into a multiple piece system that each panel fit exactly to the contour of the specific make and model of truck, the other improvement was to utilize the rubber mat to cover the bed and hold it in place with a channel that was built into each of the sidewall pieces.
Rubber soaks up impacts to prevent dents.  With both plastic liners and bed mats, part of the way they protect from dents is by spreading impact hits over a larger area. Us truck owners, like to keep our truck clean and well maintained, making sure that we use only the best of what is available to us. When it comes to what we use in/on our truck, we can sometimes be very picky. Most of my truck buddies use very expensive products to insure that their truck will last along time as well as perform to its maximum capabilities. Several of these guys spend over nine dollars per quart of oil, and they change the trucks oil every 3000 miles, not 3001 if you know what I mean. They take there trucks to the local dealership and spend a fortune with scheduled maintenance. For instance, if the owners manual says that they should change their windshield wipers at every 25000 miles that is what they do. Not only do they change them they pay $80.00 for the OEM‘s (Original Equipment Manufacturer) version, you could buy replacement wipers from NAPA for $17.99. They also pay $120.00 for a paper air filter which they could save some dough and get a far superior K and N rechargeable air filter for less than half of the price.

The reason that I brought that up was, because they have a “spare no expense attitude” when it comes to taking care of their trucks, that is until you take a look in the bed of their truck. They took the cheap way out, most of them have the drop in plastic liners that were purchased from a local truck accessory store. I think that this is the craziest thing I have ever seen. Here is a guy that can show you every receipt for every penny he spent on his truck and he gets a bed liner that causes more damage than what it protects. I don’t know how he let the truck accessory sales guy talked him into it. I am sure it was less than the others that he was considering but it is pretty much common sense that a drop in will shift around and wear off the paint.

After seeing the drop in bed liners in there trucks I thought there has to be a way to get real truck bed protection with out permanently altering your truck with a spray on type bed liner. The Spray on bed liners really only have a shelf live of 3 years or less, and after those three years you can not take it out. Just as I started my research (that’s a fancy word for messing around on the internet), I came across a new type of bed liner it is called the Dual Liner, which you could call a hybrid bed liner because it uses a rubber floor mat and it uses plastic panels to protect the sidewalls. Both the floor mat and the sidewalls are vastly improved from its predecessors. For the Floor they use a 3/8ths inch thick (the thickest in the industry that I found) Zero Skid rubber mat. This rubber mat is very sticky so your cargo will not slide around and the mat is lifted off the truck bed by several rubber nipples strategically placed to leave room for water to drain out through the factory designed drain holes. The two draw backs of the old style rubber mat were, one they trapped water underneath the bed liner and, two they had no protection for the sidewalls. Dual Liner took care of both of those drawback of the old rubber mats. Now for the sidewalls they made these different from the old drop ins by making it 5 separate pieces that lock together. Each piece “snaps” into place and fallows the exact contour of the trucks sheet metal. This is much different than how the old drop ins fit, the drop ins do not fallow the contour of your truck which allows them to shift around while you are going down the road, This also covers up the much used cargo tie downs, so it become more difficult to secure your load with a drop in. Dual Liner addressed the draw backs of the drop ins while still giving you the use of the tie downs, without sacrificing the finish of your truck. The Dual Liner is the only bed liner on the market to offer the highest level of dent protection as well as paint protection at the same time. The Dual Liner can be taken out at any time, it truly preserves the trucks bed.  Since the average length of ownership today is 63.9 months, I think for less than $6.25 per month it is an easy decision to make. He decides the fate of your truck, it doesn’t matter if he realizes it or not. If the bed liner installer has an appointment that he needs to keep, are you sure that he is not going to cut corners to insure that he is done in a certain amount of time. The process of installing a spray in bed liner is a critical process that determines not only the life of the truck but the performance and usability. To install a “LineX or Rhino-Liner spray on bed liner there are four main surface preparation processes. Not all installers are willing to take the time or use the materials necessary to insure the best chance of proper adhesion to your trucks box.

Chemical etch=This is the lowest quality preparation method. It is inherently inconsistent, which means the liner material won’t adhere to the bed uniformly…and will scrape/peel off after the fact. If an installer says they use a chemical etch process exclusively, walk away. Scotchbrite scuff prep= This is the most common form of surface preparation, and most Line-X and Rhino installers rely upon this method. If done correctly, scuffing the original bed surface will help the liner material bond completely. The quality of this prep process is dictated by the experience of the person doing the prep work…which is why you want to work with the best installer possible. Hand sand block=In some ways, this is a step above the scothbrite prep process, except that it’s still very much dependent on the experience of the person doing the sanding. Power sanding with dual action sander=This is the best prep process there is. However, it’s very time consuming. If you find an installer that uses power tools to prep your bed’s paint, expect to pay a slight premium.
When choosing an installer you are more likely to get a qualified installer if you know somebody who has used the particular shop that you are looking at. These spray on companies come and go, they are notorious for being “fly by night operations,” because it is very easy to qualify as a franchise location. To a spray on installer the less time and the less product that they use on your truck equals more profit to them.
Questions To Ask Your Installer How do you prep the vehicles? The best answer is “power sanding” and the worst answer is “chemical etch.” Do you use a cold application process or a hot application process? Unless you want a tacky, rubbery surface, a hot application process is the way to go. In fact, most Rhino liner installers have moved away from the cold application process. How long does your prep process take? Longer is usually better. Many Line-X and Rhino dealers can scotchbrite a pickup bed in 15 minutes…but power-sanding a bed takes the better part of an hour. There’s also the time needed to remove any other truck bed accessories installed in the bed, misc. bolts, etc., and then re-install. Most good installers need 2 hours minimum from beginning to end, and some will need 3 or 4. How long have you been in business? Longer is better. Rhino and Line-X both require their installers to honor many aspects of the warranty, which means installers are financially responsible for their mistakes. Bad installers tend to go out of business after a few years because they can’t afford to fix all their mistakes. Can I see your shop? Good installers tend to have clean, well-organized shops. They can’t afford to have a lot of dust and dirt around because that will contaminate their sprays. A good spray-in liner shop will be proud to show off their facility.

You can do all this work or you could choose to put in a bed liner that is not a Life sentence. This can cause several issues down the line, including slippage of the bedliner itself. These bedliners are really not one of the best options available.

Most people, after reviewing all their choices, will opt for a spray-in liner. While these liners can have their advantages, their drawbacks outweigh them by far. Spray-on bedliners have several different chemical compositions, some of which are more high tech than others. The main flaw with spray-on bedliners, is that they require you to completely remove the entire painted surface of your truck bed in order to install them, they are also sprayed on with less thickness on the walls of your truck bed. The fact that you have to completely remove any traces of paint from your truck bed can be a major turn off when buying a spray-in. Who wants to void their paint warranty and possibly their entire truck warranty just to get a bedliner installed? While spray-in bedliners do offer better slip-resistance than a drop-in, which offers almost none, they pale in comparison to systems like the DualLiner, which have zero-skid technology, meaning your load will not go anywhere.
